CHAPTER 16

PENELOPE

I stand outside the walls of El Toro’s villa, clutching the damp, crumpled piece of paper with Frederico’s number written on it. With trembling fingers, I press redial on his number and wait, praying for him to answer again.

“Frederico,” I whisper into the receiver, my voice barely audible, “He’s planning to kill your brothers.”

But Frederico hasn’t answered.

The phone defaults to a generic voicemail.

Frederico’s lack of response stabs me like a blade. But I leave a message, tears streaming down my face. “He will attack Las Vegas.” I assume Frederico will know I mean El Toro. “I need you. We need you. Your family needs you.”

The line remains agonizingly silent, leaving me feeling more alone than ever before.

I click off, my breaths coming in ragged gasps, as the reality of Frederico’s abandonment sinks in.

He has coldly and abruptly severed our ties, cutting off all communication. The man I thought I knew—the man I loved—is gone, replaced by a stranger who no longer cares for me.

“¡Maldita sea!” I curse under my breath, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides. I kick the base of the wall with all the strength I can muster.

“Mami?” Marco’s small voice says as he stands beside me, his worried eyes searching mine. I plaster a smile onto my face, the corners of my lips trembling with the effort.

“Everything’s okay, mi amor,” I say through gritted teeth, trying to hide the anguish that threatens to consume me. “Mami just needs a minute.”

As I walk back to the villa, I vow to protect my son—our son—regardless of Frederico’s absence.

My heart may be shattered, but for Marco, I will find a way to survive.

And I have done my part, I tell myself. I have left a message about El Toro’s plan to attack Frederico’s brothers.

“Let’s go,” I tell Marco. He reaches over and takes my hand, his small fingers wrapping around mine, reminding me that his love is still here even if Frederico’s isn’t.

My thoughts spiral out of control, and I come to a dangerous conclusion: I have to show Frederico the severity of his abandonment. Maybe then, he’ll realize the consequences of his actions and come back to us.

“Marco, stay with Mariana tonight, okay?” I tell him, planting a kiss on his forehead. “Mami has something important to do.”

“Okay, Mami,” he agrees, wrapping his small arms around my neck.

We’re about to step inside when one of El Toro’s several girls—the young women he likes to surround himself with, who fawn over him—steps out of the gate.

“Ah. There you are! What are you doing out here?” she asks.

“We went for a walk,” I say, suddenly glad she didn’t come out even ten minutes earlier—I can’t afford for any of El Toro’s people to know I’m trying to warn Frederico of what the cartel has planned for his family.

“Ah, that’s good to hear,” she says, her tone almost too sweet. “You know, El Toro has been asking about you. He’s worried about his little protege.”

“Tell him not to worry,” I snap, the anger from Frederico’s abandonment flaring up within me.
